Just because they haven't come to terms doesn't necessarily mean the Rams are low balling Donald. Maybe Donald is asking too much. Maybe they agree on money but can't figure out terms (length of contract, guarantee, bonuses, etc.).
Unless I missed it there hasn't been anything credible printed that says the Rams are offering a below-market contract.
To be fair AR, the Rams should be offering Donald a salary that makes him the highest pad DT in the NFL. He's been dominant from the moment he stepped on the field on day one. If they are offering him anything less than that, they are low-balling him.
On the other hand, TA barely produces at all. To be fair, HIS salary should have been based on his being a kick return specialist more than anything, yet his contract seems to have been the result of conjecture and mindless infatuation.
Quite simply, Austin has been a bust; Donald has been a home run.
Fairness is a 2 way street, Classical.
This AD contract thing has to make sense for the Rams, too. They hold all the cards and time is on their side for 4 more seasons.
Your Tavon example is a good one to demonstrate how the Rams foolishly (and prematurely) overpaid. Yet, they won't get a penny in refund from Tavon, will they? Where's your precious "fairness" in that?
Like I said, fairness is a 2 way street and has no place in contract negotiations, anyway. When 2 willing parties enter into an agreement then they should both be prepared to live by the agreed terms. That's the whole point, isn't it?
I have no idea what led them to believe that Tavon Austin was going to live up to his contract, but if I were in the Rams' position, I would opt for a proactive approach and try to take care of AD. I often recommend similar measures where I work; I like to keep good employees motivated and performing.
