The Rams offense was so predictable, he take 5 times the hits per carry than other running backs so while his carries are down because the offense is so bad and don't have the volume of total plays because they can't get a first down, one run for Gurley is like 5 runs for other running backs because 9 guys run at him from the other team before the snap of the play and he gets more hits and more pile ups on him. The other part is when there is no space, battered runningback besides the big pile ups on him is the inability to get any space. When that happens, runningbacks start preparing for the hits they are about to receive instead of looking for holes in case one does open up occasionally. Gurley's running vision was shot. That is what I mean by battered runningback syndrome.
They played 9 in the box in 2015 too. The offensive system was simply not that different in 2016. They were no more predictable in 2016 than in 2015. And so on. To me, trying to give Gurley a free pass on this simply will not work.
Look---these stats, the particular ones I chose and provided above, reflect one thing and one thing only.
These stats measure Gurley's own contribution on plays.
For example, to name just one thing these stats show, in 2015 he got yards after contact, in 2016 that fell off. It's that simple. That's Gurley being less effective...in himself, regardless of any other consideration.
To me---and I am quite adamant about this---there was just simply not one cause for how the running game did in 2016. There were other causes, and in fact they compounded one another, but
Gurley was one of them.
Now if you don't agree with that then we disagree forever and should just leave it at that. We differ, you see it the way you see it, that;'s fine, and I agree to disagree. That's just where I stand on this.
