What if he wants to take up the entire salary cap? You would give it to him because that's what he wants, right?
This is not hard, take the top DT $$ now and add 10% w/60-70% G-jack.
He's being paid as one of the 4-5 top DEFENDERS.
Not DTs.
That means his reference pool includes guys like Von Miller.
....
Regardless how his agent wants to market him, he still has to weigh the fact that the Rams could get away with paying him around $40 million over the next four years with very little guarantee money.
Obviously the Rams and especially Donald don't want to to go that route, but worst case scenario it could.
If he wants his money two years before his rookie contract expires and then a possible three years of franchise tags at DT money he is going to have to be reasonable with his demands.
If his agent doesn't realize that, he needs to find a new one.
It's what the Rams realize. They realize they fully and openly and publicly assented to an extension. They've already said in public that he has earned and will get a big contract. They also understand that with a player of Donald's caliber, playing hardball would be counterproductive. If he wanted to, he could just say fine trade me. Plus of course playing hardball would just backfire in terms of team morale.
What you list there are not real options. They're merely on paper options the Rams have obviously already discarded. The Rams are acting like they fully realize that they can't do hardball on this one. This isn't Zygmunt trying to squeeze Warner. It's all very different from that.
