But it's a bit more complicated than that.
AD and his agent need to weigh what AD would make via sticking to original contract plus two franchise tag years tacked on vs what he would make if extended now at a more reasonable amount than you suggest with reasonable guaranteed money. THAT'S the true contract differential for both AD and the Rams.
Remember, the Rams are holding all the cards for the next 4 seasons if push comes to shove. Plus, AD must know that a serious injury during any of those 4 seasons could be devastating for his financial future.
Clearly, paying him whatever he wants is a nonstarter.
And I suspect that the Rams are shooting for terms that are shy of what you outlined. Perhaps that's why the negotiations are dragging on a bit?
