Final straw? IMO? OTAs. McVay said very early on that one key purpose of OTAs was to see how well players translated the info from meetings to performance on grass. GR admitted he made a lot of mistakes.
It could also be that there were behind the scenes things we don't know about. Like I can imagine this scenario---GR makes mistakes, they call him on them, he reacts badly.
I don't know if that's even remotely true, just imagining how it might have gone.
The key was the mistakes though. IMO.
