In OTAs Brown is playing with the 1s. But that's OTAs. I can even venture an idea of what that is---JB has shown that he is taking the classroom to the field with fewer issues than GR is.
The smart bet is that you don't assume that lasts through training camp. It could, it might, and so on. But you don't assume it will. Maybe JB reaches a low ceiling (no one knows yet) and maybe GR becomes a slow initial learner who gets it together. Or maybe neither pans out. Or maybe both pan out and you have a good problem. Or maybe there's an injury (something not foreign to the history of Rams OLs).
Either way you find out in late August, not late May.
I grant that GR doesn't inspire confidence when it comes to this BUT I have seen players in the past who turn it around or change or break through after not being promising at first. I don't rule it out.
Either way, do you normally cut a guy who is playing tackle with the 2s?
So even if JB ends up being the starter, if GR is with the 2s he is ahead of others.
Remember, these coaches are acting reasonably. So they don't automatically go "he's not a #1, burn him." Having said that I don't rule out him being cut (eventually) either.
They still have to figure out the best 9 or 10. They play the best 5 and then they need a 6,.7, and so on.
