He's a McVay type of WR, pure and simple.
If he stays healthy, I like his chances to be among the final 6. In fact, hard for me to see McVay cutting him. I don't think Spruce lasts an hour on the PS, either. So, if he's cut, he's a goner.
As to WR locks? I think that there are only 3 of them now, not 4, pending camp and PS games. I'm serious.
Woods
Kupp
Reynolds
All 3 newbies brought in by McVay. These are the guys that we KNOW that McVay wanted badly enough to invest heavily in via cap dollars or draft picks.
All the others must win him over, I think. Including Tavon. Yeah, I said it.
Now, please don't go knee jerk closed minded on me before you hear me out, fellas.
I really believe that McVay has the stones to keep the best 6 based upon what he sees in the classroom and on the practice field. Tavon no longer has the luxury of being a Fisher sacred cow. IOW, Tavon needs to impress in order to stick. I can see scenarios where 3 other WR's demonstrate that they have more value to contribute to winning football than does Tavon.
Maybe a late trade could be arranged where we give up Tavon for a later pick (a 5th?) and agree to eat a portion of Tavon's '17 salary? I mean, there are ways to make Tavon's departure doable from a cap pov if the Rams really, really like 6 other WR's better. And, frankly, I think that that is just possible this summer. Tavon has limitations as a WR, as we all know.
In addition to my above 3 definite locks, there are these candidates for the 6, don't you think?
Cooper
Thomas
Spruce
McRoberts
And who knows? Maybe another dark horse really emerges in camp. Wouldn't greatly surprise me under this coaching staff, tbh.
If 3 or more of these guys really blows up in camp and PS games, it's gonna get real interesting to predict Tavon's Ram future.
And we've already heard strong early praise for Thomas and Spruce, haven't we?
The WR competition will probably be the most intense and interesting of all position groups this summer.
