The plan all along was to have Austin focus on the routes he would be running on game day, aka, the Desean Jackson role. The role I have been promoting for him since his inception on the roster.
That's exactly the wrong thing to do with Tavon. It's not just route running or hands...he does not have the full package you want to call someone a "receiver."
That's not what he is and to me, it's a waste of time to try it.
In fact I think they know that, and are doing it this way---we push you to be DeSean West and if you can't do THAT then we don't need you.
Well I don't think he CAN do that.
To me he always was and always will be the combined yards, multiple weapon guy we saw in 2015. That's what Tavon should be perfecting.
I would like to be wrong about this but I have to say, it doesn't look like a good move to me. I don't think he can be a pure receiver. I think it's a mistake to either view him as one (as many try to do) or to ask him to play like one (which apparently McVay is doing).
If they stick with this, my view is, he won't come through.
And this is from a guy who advocated taking him and always defends him. I like Tavon. But I was saying before the 2013 draft, when I advocated taking him, that he's not a pure receiver and you don't use him as one.
