At least if he was saying that in terms of hoping the player they really wanted as their first choice who had a reasonable shot of making it to the 2nd Round. That player is Evan Engram, who happens to be getting rave reviews for his polish, speed, and athleticism at Giants mini camp. That's the guy many on this board were hoping we'd get. I didn't see anyone say I hope Everett drops to us or even we should take him in the 2nd round.
If Snead really meant Everett well then it was never in doubt that he'd make it to the 2nd round. Some thought he'd make it to the 3rd Round.
No big deal really. Just an example of a GM tossing out BS, when he doesn't get the guy he really wanted going into the draft.
Everett was their backup plan. They'll hope that he becomes a serviceable move TE. But watching Engram you can see that we missed out on an elite player.
Two things, max.
First, alert the media! GM spreads disinformation during the draft! Well, duh. Yeah, Engram might have been their preferred player and hope, but it was the impossible dream at #37. Everett was their targeted guy with their realistic pick. Both statements can be true, rather than being mutually exclusive.
Second, to say we missed out on an elite player is a bit disingenuous. We missed out on about 25 other elite players, as well. Because we lacked a pick when they were still on the board.
I continue to believe that Everett was McVay's targeted player among those that would realistically be likely to be still there at our earliest pick. That's all that could be expected barring a ridiculous trade up. How do we criticize anyone for that? Geez...
