. Armey had a big hand in 2006 too and as we know that was a disaster. Those 2 drafts combined yielded guys like Barron, Incognito, Terrell, Byrd, and Wroten---kind of a who;s who of Rams knuckleheads.

So IMO the real problem was that NEITHER Armey nor Martz was very good at drafting without Vermeil.

In terms of structure, in the Martz years Shaw gave Zygmunt, Armey, and Martz equal say and they had to vote to decide things. For a long stint there Martz and Zygment simply froze Armey out. But then as I said, when Armey got back in the driver's seat, he really wasn't any better than Martz.

...

Jay Zygmunt had General Manager added to his title after the 2005 season, it was he and Scott Linehan (who Zgymunt wanted as Head Coach) that oversaw the disastrous 2006 draft. However, I agree that Armey and Martz were not as good with Dick Vermeil and IMO Vermeil does not get enough credit for being the straw that stirred the drink.

I stand corrected about 2006.

However, and this is just agreement within being nitpicky, that Vermeil did more than stir the drink when he was there. I basically see all the picks in his era as his (except Holt, as stated). So I think he was the drink. He had all those years watching college football from the booth, which contributed. He may just have been a better personnel guy than is generally acknowledged.
