Who has heard the statement (at least 100 times) "a good coach will adapt his system to fit his players and not the other way around". Well in the draft, you have the luxury of picking the players who you believe fit the system. Who here (or anywhere) knows what McVay's system looks like? The report on every defensive player we drafted basically said "Wade Phillips type".
I was hoping we'd draft a quality center but I'm not an O line coach. Forest Lamp was the highest rated OL taken. Bolles and Ramczyk were drafted before Lamp. All three were LT's throughout their NCAA careers. Yet Lamp has to move "inside". All experts are fairly certain he can move to OG without a problem. Many think he can play OC too. We'll see. Where are the Chargers going to play him?
The kid from So. Alabama has got skills.
The WR has superior route running ability, gorilla hands and natural football ability
The S played CB for 3 years before moving to safety.
The WR from A & M can take the top off defenses
The OLB is a beast
The DT is AD lite
The FB might end up being a fan favorite
And the DE fits the Phillips mold but has had injuries.
Let's see who they get in the UDFA department as I'm sure if they're looking for a C, they'll sign a couple. How much more enticing can it be to know with one more back injury or twisted knee you can move into the starting lineup?
But for the most part, we don't know who fits McVay's system as we don't know what it is in reality. Is it Jay Gruden's? Kyle Shanahan's? No. It's Sean McVay's.
