Michigan tight end Jake Butt, who suffered a right knee injury in the Wolverines' loss to Florida State in the Orange Bowl,
reportedly had taken out an insurance policy that would pay if an injury affected his NFL Draft status.Such insurance policies have been common for many years for top athletes in the NCAA football and basketball ranks. ESPN's Darren Rovell reported Friday night that Butt had taken out $4 million in total disability insurance, and had purchased $2 million in loss of value insurance he would start collecting if he falls below the second round in the 2017 draft.
Butt, a 2016 All-American and the John Mackey Award winner as the nation's top tight end, suffered the injury in the second quarter. Unconfirmed reports said the injury involved a torn ACL or MCL.
Butt already has recovered from one ACL surgery he had as a sophomore. He had considered declaring for the 2016 NFL Draft, but opted to return to Ann Arbor.
