Bettis quit playing and was just going through the motions. He had actually lost his starting job to Leonard Russell in 95. I would call the PR office for news weekly because no internet at that time and they called him "Jerry Beatus". True story.
Bettis started 13 games that year. He was dinged mid-season and Russell got a few starts...but Russell was terrible. I do remember Tony and or Kirk calling him that name...but still, given Bettis's success before and after Rich Brooks it seems like the problem was with Brooks as much as anything.
