Good post.
I concur that they are looking for explosive playmakers. McVay has mentioned guys that take the top off the defense many times.
But I’m confused why you eliminate guys like Kupp, Hansen, Stewart, and Godwin but keep Juju, Jones, and Reynolds as fallback options.
Can you expound on that a little?
They have looked at a lot of slot WRs. So it seems Kupp would be in play.
Godwin has deep speed. Per PFF, he had the highest deep target percentage out of all these names. He had a deep target 34.8% of the time. Contrast that with John Ross’ 22%.
Stewart is a good all-around guy too.
I’m wondering why you would say they are out?
Its really where they land in the draft.
JuJu Smith-Schuster is the youngest player in the draft and I think he can grow into a Anquan Boldin type. Not a true #1, but a WR you want on your team. I am not sure i can say the same with anyone else in the draft. I do have concerns about his separation issues.
As far as Kupp, I just cannot see them using a 3rd on a slot guy. Esp. a slot guy without HR speed. Let me be clear. I like Kupp, alot, and was prolly one of the 1st players to mention his name.
Godwin just doesn't strike me a 2nd round WR. IMO (let me stress that) he doesn't play up to his combine speed. he was an afterthought until the combine and I have him rated as a 3rd rounder. If thats where they take a WR. i'm fine with it being him or Zay Jones.
Stewart is a favorite of LARAMs, so thats good enough for me TBH. I just think he is a more of a run and catch guy then a creates separation guy. The one thing I would take away from him is: he plays physical and bigger than he is. And he is competitive. hard to bet against that combo.
Hansen is a Flipper favorite, which is again, more then enough for me. i just think he is an average athlete (although more of an athlete then you would think) that could have separation issues and not the strength of a Boldin type. As a 4th rounder, go for it. As a 3rd rounder? Not so much.
So why a kid like Reynolds over Stewart, Hansen and Godwin? Reynolds is a playmaker. Wins 50/50 balls, wins in the redzone, wins deep. His biggest knock is weight and wirey frame.
I'm not a big fan of Zay Jones for a mirade of reasons, but I think the Rams like him because he was a high volume target that made plays. i wouldn't draft him in the 2nd either, but I think the Rams could. And after all, this is about the Rams.
