This is what I don't get.
Some on this board are all excited about trying to amass some more 4th round picks for this draft by perhaps trading back in the 2nd.
Funny how the NEXT draft seems like wonderful players can be found in the 4th.
But when reality strikes, we realize that there is a reason that guys are chosen in the 1st and 2nd rounds.
These guys I talked about were from the 4th round through UDFAs. And so there is little faith here they can ever become much. And I agree. I personally believe that of all them Spruce might be the one to become a solid-plus player. Higbee, perhaps. Cooper and Thomas.....I seriously doubt it.
Point being: we will do VERY well in this coming draft if our 2nd and 3rd rounders become solid or solid-plus starters. Any thought that we could possibly count on the 4th rounders to 7th rounders amounting to much is simply a shot in the dark. Might we hit on one......maybe two? It's not impossible but the odds stack against it.
So I want to see a WR or TE taken in rounds 2 or 3. No linemen until round 4. I want the odds to be with us.
Here's the thing, Rock.
Every draft and every round are different. IOW, might be a mistake to apply general rules of thumb appropriate for a normal draft to this unusual draft class.
None other than our own Alyo believes that this year's 4th round is the sweet spot.
Plus, Snead is on record as stating that when one considers a proposed trade down of, say, 8-10 spots, one makes darned sure that there are 8-10 players that you would be happy to have available below your pick to be traded. When that situation exists, a 4th rounder pickup is a free roll. And more picks means more chances to hit a HR.
So.....
I could well see a possible trade down out of #37 when and if the above circumstances align. Especially with a wheeler dealer like Snead.
BTW, Snead is on record as saying how much he likes the talent that will be available in the midrounds. And heaven knows we could use another starter quality pick.
In short, I think Florida may be onto something (in this particular draft).
