I believe that some of that philosophy that you can get OL in later rounds comes from Snead.
What they acted on was free agency. They approach line building as something you can do with free agency.
Actually the list of OL they acquired in 2012 was very long.
The people who say they didn';t pay attention to the line are just themselves not paying attention to the fact that free agency is a valid approach to line building. Different teams have done it over the years and it can work, just like any other approach, or not work, just like any other approach.
In fact so far, it's what McVay has done.
The idea that you are not serious about OL building unless you use high draft picks is to me simply a prejudice of the person saying it. It has nothing to do with the reality of NFL line building, which includes several approaches that have been successful for different teams.
.
Through free agency so he can concentrate on other positions in the draft.
So its not black and white, it depends upon what your team building objective is.
Jeff Fisher inherited a rebuilding situation, his approach should have been divergent to McVay's.
He should have built youth and continuity through the draft out the gate.
McVay's task is totally different.
First, McVay is doing exactly what Fisher did with an OL that was under similar circumstances (I am focusing exclusively on the OL). When it comes to OL building, McVay';s main moves are in free agency, both high-end and budget free agency. Which is no different, in philosophy approach or kind of thinking, to 2012. Except that in 2012 the Rams acquired MORE linemen than so far McVay has (and probably can or will). They had Saffold at LOT, Dahl at ROG,and added Richardson Hunter Turner Williams Smith Barksdale and Wells. So far McVay has added 3, using free agency and picking up a guy who was cut, and that's the same as 2012 with the one difference being so far they have not added as many as they did in 2012.
Unless you're saying (when it comes to OL building) that they intend on drafting some high this year? Cause unless they pick a lineman in either rounds 2 or 3, they're just doing the same thing that Fisher--and many others---did with the OL in their first years.
And. Building an OL through free agency along with other kinds of veteran acquisitions is an old approach others have used before. In rebuilding situations. In their first year. There is no book of dogma saying how that MUST be done. There are many ways to skin that cat, and they have all worked before, and they have all failed before.
....
....
The fact that they are doing the same thing has nothing to do with what I said.
Actually it shouldn't be the same which was my point, the circumstances are totally different.
