Was Jared Goff valid in the comments he made about the Los Angeles Rams? The Los Angeles Rams had a rough season last year. Things hardly went according to plan after they finished the season 4-12. Which is why the comments made by the Rams young quarterback Jared Goff are a bit surprising.
During day one of offseason press conferences Goff made a remark that made noise in league circles.
““I think I speak for the whole team, I think we’re a lot closer to where we want to be than people may think. We’ve got the players, we’ve got the talent, we’ve got all the pieces we need, really. It’s just about putting it together now.”
Goff’s sentiments would be taken more seriously were it not for the Rams abominable 2016 season. The Rams were the worst offense in the NFL last season. They were dead last in total yards and scoring.
Their defense was not as bad as their offense, but it was not spectacular either. Their defense was ninth in total yards but were 23rd in scoring defense.
It is conceivable that the Rams could drastically improve next season. What makes it tough to believe is the roster. The Rams talent dictates that they should be better than 4-12. However, they are not exactly where Goff is projecting them to be.
The goal for this Rams team is to make the playoffs. Goff’s statement indicates that the Rams are nearly a playoff team and will be once they get it together.
All but two teams in the playoffs last season won 10 games. It is safe to say that 10 wins in most circumstances will ensure a spot in the playoffs.
It is tough to believe that the Rams will go from four wins to nine or 10 in one year. The acquisitions they made during the offseason did improve their team, but not drastically. Their biggest addition in the offseason came in the form of left tackle Andrew Whitworth.
While Whitworth will help improve the protection around Goff, it will take some superb coaching from Sean McVay for this team to improve heavily next season. That is because he will need to coach up Goff to the point where he can lead this team effectively from the quarterback position.
Goff is the key to the Rams’ success. If he plays at a high level they will definitely win more games. The Rams lost a fair share of close games last season due to bad quarterback play. Things could be vastly different if Goff ends up playing at a high level this season.
So Goff’s comments may seem unfounded, but that could just be because he believes he will be the difference maker that generates more wins. Of course he believes in his teammates abilities to get their jobs done, but most importantly he believes in his own capabilities.
All eyes will be on him to see if he does his part in making sure the Rams live up to his proclamation.
