My brother abused drugs for years, spent lots of time in prison, stealing from my folks to support his habit, etc., etc. Then one day he realized, by himself by the way, that his life was in the dumpster because of HIS choices. It was nobody else's fault. So he went clean and sober, got a job as a drug and alcohol counselor, and is doing pretty well now. So it is possible for a person to change like that, but that person has to really want to for it to work.
