I think I was around 6 or 7 at the time. He had gone to the same high school as my mom-Lincoln High. The rams also signed his team mate at UCLA Woody Strode who was also black. Strode was not that good of a pro player and Washington was pretty banged up when he was signed. Neither he nor Strode were allowed to play pro after they graduated from UCLA for several years until the Rams agreed to as a condition of getting to play in the Coliseum. They both played with Jackie Robinson at UCLA. Washington could have been a tremendous pro if he had been allowed to play right after UCLA and had not been injured.
