Alden Gonzales minimizes the Barnes' release, imo.
It was a helluva lot more than just a cost cutting move. It was more of a "we can and must do better" move.
McVay and co looked at the roster and prioritized positions they wanted to upgrade commensurate with what was available in free agency and the draft.
They needed to make some roster changes, trades, cuts in order to make the changes they sought.
There is no there there.
Sometimes a player is a cap casualty and that's all there is.
And this is about thinking a position is good enough to win with, not championing "my boy".
There are a number of successful o-lines in the league with JAG's at center.
The Rams felt they could replace that position on the cheap, which is why they low balled Groy.
They miscalculated.
'My boy", la? Lol.
Here's my take on the Barnes decision.
The cap savings differential after releasing Barnes and signing a Groy type FA was inconsequential. A mere rounding error in terms of cap impact.
The motivation to replace him lay in their belief that his play was so deficient that they could easily upgrade it. Otherwise, they would never ever release a starting C without already having a reasonable replacement already on the roster.
I can't say it any simpler than that. That should tell both of us all we need to know about their impressions about A) Barnes level of play.
The likelihood of being able to significantly improve his play. C) The necessity of dramatically improving C play for their young QB and RB, and the '17 O, in general. D) Their certainty that they could upgrade C play either through FA, draft, or trade.
Not that complicated based on the evidence, my boy. Lol.
