My son and I discussed this at lunch yesterday and I think his take is right on.
Guys like TruJ don't come along very often. He has everything; size, speed, good cover, physical, plays hurt, stays healthy, seems to be coachable and a good teammate. He did NOT have a great year in 2016, but who on the Rams did? That was a lousy team who knew they were lousy and knew that they had little chance of winning games. A guy on a 1 year deal is going to protect himself to some degree especially when winning is not going to happen.
But, was 2016 more like who he is, or was 2015 more like who he is?
What with a new regime, and an all time great DC coming in, 2017 is when we find out.
Franchise him. It's a 1 year deal. And yes it's too much money. But that's the price of not knowing exactly what you have.
If he returns to 2015 form, work out a long term extension/contract. If he performs to 2016 level, let him walk.
