The move that kept the Patriots' dynasty going

February 06, 2017 04:39PM
How they played the Matt Cassel / Tom Brady situation in 2008 and 2009.

Brady's knee is blown out in the opener in 2008.

Cassel comes on and plays great. Fantastic.

The talk begins - 'Cassel is the future.'

The Patriots did nothing to stymie that talk. May have even promoted it. But didn't believe it for a second.

They franchise Cassel in early 2009. Bold gamble. Then they trade him to Kansas City for a pick early in the second round of the 2009 draft.

I don't even know who they got with that pick.

For me, though, it was how they handled that.

They had no intention of moving on from Brady, but were able to parlay Cassel's success into a high draft pick.

I know this is going to rub a lot of people the wrong way ... but that is how I think the Rams should have handled the Warner / Bulger thing a few years earlier.

But ... they didn't.
