It's more than just that. Virtually all head coaches with rare exceptions hire their own staff. It's actually an insult to the head coach to handle the hirings for him or even be involved.
Plus it goes like this. McVay came aboard with Phillips, which speaks well of McVay. If we're speaking well of McVay, then, we also have to credit the people who hired him FOR hiring him. Right?
