That "Drill Sargent" management style is for idiots. McVay's management style has a higher chance of success without breeding discontent. Intelligent people simply do not respond to the antiquated autocratic model. I have found that I have more success appealing to people on an intellectual level. I used to get criticized by older managers until they started to realize that people who work for me are happier and want to stay on my projects.
Also, my teams, and others who's management styles are similar to mine, have far lower staff attrition rates.
Create a culture of responsibility and intellectualism and people will follow suit, and if not, you don't want them.
