If it's true, it's a fool's errand to allow somebody who has no skin in the game and who is not connected to the organization in any way have such influence. What interest does Jon Gruden have in the Rams becoming champions? None.
What happens to Gruden if McVay is a failure? Does he keep his job?
Gruden may have personal feelings about McVay and Shanahan and the others and most likely what the Rams got from him is simply the emoting of that. In his head it could be little more than that McVay reminds him of himself, so he's the guy he wants to promote. But would he still be the guy if his job and reputation depended on it? Most times when you take such decisions out of the abstract and into the reality of having an ass on the line, that decision changes.
