Add the production from UDFA signings as depth and even starters...
Good point
And also. My bet is this. If people went and looked at drafts of teams that they know draft well, they would be very surprised what the hit percentage is.
Having done that myself, I can promise you, hitting on 50% of your picks is exceptional. Like, superb. And rare.
An example. One of the Rams best draft years was 98. Wistrom was a good player though not a Quinn. They also got Hakim and Little. Plus the serviceable Roland Williams. Holcomb wasn't a feature back but he was the FB in 99.
Their straight-up hit percentage that year? 62.5%.
That's just an amazing and exceptional hit percentage.
Though at the same time, they really only produced one star---Little, who didn't become a star until he moved to DE.
The rest were just anywhere from good to good role players.
But that is still a rare kind of draft.
What made that year what it was, though (in terms of personnel acquisition), were the UDFAs and "grunt market" cheap FAs. That included Fletcher, Warner, and Nutten.
