I know, from posters I trust, that this is not as violent a transition as it appears ... and honestly I can only see one real issue.
I have been scouting for about 7 years I think ... and I have never scouted for us from a 3-4 perspective, nor have I been focusing much on 3-4 aligned players this year ... and this has caught me more than a tad off guard.
So let me look at what we have when in a base 3-4 ... as nickel 4-2-5 should be about the same ...
NT - Brockers and Cam Thomas ... this for me is the easiest transition ... Brockers IMO could also play at the 5 T ... There are many teams making this switch that don't have a capable Nose on the roster. We got lucky here I think.
5T - Donald? Sims? Westbrooks? Easley? Im not sure if these 3 techs are long enough or that Sims is heavy enough. Westbrooks seems like a solid rotational guy though.
3-4 OLB - Quinn, Littleton, Grigsby ... oddly Littleton and Grigsby played that spot in college so we have some depth. BUt how much of an issue will that be for Quinn? Might it help him not having to burst out of his stance as far as his back goes? Thoughts on that?
ILB - We Have Forrest and Ogletree ... both played ILB in college and Tree played in a 3-4 ... this may actually suit him better, both of them in fact. We need depth here, but that can be had later in the draft, IMO, or even in UDFA.
Secondary doesn't really change ... though I'm less sure we keep TJ now.
Player left out -- Barron. 3-4 OLB? ILB? Box Safety again? Anyone have any ideas?
Needs ... 5 tech ... OLB opposite Quinn ... depth at ILB.
Of course, I have not been focus tracking these positions because we ran a 4-3 and needed a DE, now that changes and Demarcus Walker is off my board, and TJ Watt jumps into his place ... though I'm sure of CB at 37 now unless Wormley drops.
Guys like Ejuan Price and Ekanem and Tim Williams and the like are now in my field of vision ... but I have to go back and try to find more 5 techs ...
Thoughts and comments are welcome, of course, as this is mainly brainstorming and trying to convince myself that Donald will be as effective in a new system. I'm actually thinking Quinn and TRee will do better, and that Josh Forrest has a better fit in this at 6-3 255. Littleton as a situational pass rusher excites me too ...
I'm going to restart my fanspeak drafts now with these positions in mind.
