Doing it backwards and without learning from history

January 08, 2017 10:53AM
Until this organization gets a bonafide NFL GM, a guy that has been in the league for years and has a proven track record, it is wasting it's time. That old saying about those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it? Since the early 80's, the GM has been:

a combination of lawyers (Shaw and Zygmunt) who knew nothing about the makings of an NFL player, only how to make $$ for the owner;

Steve Ortmayer who gave us Lawrence Phillips and Eddie Kennison in wasting not one first round pick, but two in the same year (and also approved the trade of Jerome Bettis to take Phillips);

Charley Armey, who presided over six years of arguably the worst drafts in the history of the NFL (1st round picks Trung Canidate, Robert Thomas, Damione Lewis, Adam Archuleta, Ryan Picket, Jimmy Kennedy, Steven Jackson, Alex Barron, 2nd round selections Jacoby Shepard, Tommy Polley, Travis Fisher, Pisa Tinoisamoa, and Ron Bartell. How about a big hand for Charley, hitting on 1 pick out of 13!);

Billy Devaney (thanks for Tye Hill, Adam Carriker, Joe Klopfenstein and Brian Leonard- on second thought, thanks for NOTHING, because that's what we truly got from your two drafts;

a brief return from Zygmunt, (Chris Long and James Laurinaitis and nothing else) and now Snead. If you look at 1983 to present, we have missed on a whole hell of a lot more of our 1st and 2nd round picks than we have hit on, and you don't have to look much further than who was making selections to figure out why.
Good Lord, my kingdom to anyone than can resurrect Don Klosterman!

Until Stan figures out that Demoff should be given the $$ to pay for what a real GM tells him to and have no other input, none of this changes. Demoff is another Shaw clone, a lawyer who knows the law but nothing about football, as his career record clearly shows. It will not matter at all who our next coach is, if we continue on the road of either know-nothing lawyers or incompetent football guys as the GM. None of the clowns listed had ANY reputation for football acumen, none of them had any proven track record of success putting together an NFL roster, yet somehow they were given the job. If management continues putting zero thought into it's GM/director of player personnel, nothing changes. Bellichick couldn't win with what went on here in the last nearly 35 years (though he probably would have taken those mid-80's teams further, and we sure as hell would have won more than one SB with Kurt, Marshall, Isaac, etc. had he been in complete control).
The simple truth is this- if the Colts had not lost their minds and gone into a vindictive mode by giving Faulk away, at exactly the same time Warner arrives literally from a grocery store, we have NOTHING for three and a half decades. That's solely on an organization that values money and nepotism over competence and ability in the position that might matter the most.
