Rams notes: After falling from starting QB to third string, Case Keenum's tenure with team will likely end SundayBy RICH HAMMOND / STAFF WRITER
THOUSAND OAKS – The Rams’ season started with Case Keenum in the huddle and under center. It will end Sunday afternoon with Keenum on the sideline and out of uniform.
Keenum isn’t injured, with the possible exception of wounded pride. Keenum, the Rams’ starting quarterback in September, became their backup last month and now is their third-stringer. Keenum likely will be inactive for a second consecutive week when the Rams play Arizona on Sunday at the Coliseum.
The winding, complicated three-season relationship between the Rams and Keenum almost certainly will end after this week, when Keenum becomes an unrestricted free agent. It seems unlikely that he would return, even as a backup to Jared Goff, but Keenum said he tries not to look ahead to 2017.
“It’s hard not to,” Keenum said after Tuesday’s practice at Cal Lutheran. “I try not to. I’m keeping it where it is right now. Today, tomorrow, try to get better. I just try to show up and get better each day.”
Still, there has to be some frustration. Keenum essentially was used as a placeholder this year, twice.
Keenum, a former practice-squad quarterback, led the Rams to three wins in their last four games in 2015, and the Rams remained adamant during the offseason that Keenum was their starter in 2016, even after they used the first pick of the draft on Goff.
