ED is an opportunist. Notice how he waited until the Rams lost to Miami and the Saints before he reported on the Fisher phone call. Now he sees the team at 4-7 going into a sure loss in NE and he pounced on his opportunity.
I think it's a combination of him wanting his team to win and looking for attention, wanting special treatment. Probably more of the later with ED. ED also is mad at Demoff, that's why he said he thinks Demoff is behind the phone call. ED said Demoff told him months ago that he was going to call him back on a business issue and ED said Demoff never called him back. So ED is not happy with the Rams organization in general.
ED also knows that the fans in LA aren't happy with Fisher and most want him out the door. So ED leveraged the vulnerable situation that Fisher is in to his advantage. Fisher made a huge mistake calling ED in the first place. He is standing on shaky ground and he picked on the wrong guy. Even if Demoff did put Fisher up to it, which is dubious, Fisher should not have taken the bait. As Herm Edwards, a friend of Fisher, said "Jeff can't win this one."
For us Rams fans who want Fisher out, this is good. It puts pressure on the Rams to make changes. Just assume that they retain Fisher next year now. What happens if he stinks it up again next year? A very real possibility based on Fisher's history. They will be in a totally untenable and indefensible situation. It will be a PR and business disaster for Kroenke.
I don't see this issue going away as long as the Rams are losing. In fact it can get a lot uglier. The Rams will be clear underdogs the next 3 games. So they will likely be 4-10 with 2 home games remaining. ED knows this and is licking his chops. He loves the attention he is getting now. ED may even show up at one of those games in his uniform and rile up the fans. Get your popcorn ready.
I will add one more thought. I think Demoff can end this thing if he wanted to. He can call ED and work something out. If he doesn't that will tell me a lot.
