NEW ORLEANS — The Rams got off to a fast start offensively, but could not contain the Saints offense at all on Sunday, falling 49-21.

New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, and running back Mark Ingram rushed for just 13 times for 142 yards and a touchdown. The Saints punted only three times in the entire game.

Los Angeles opened the game in impressive fashion, quickly driving down the field to take a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Jared Goff began the first possession with a swing pass to running back Todd Gurley that the running back took 31 yards to the Saints’ 44 yard line. Goff then hit wide receiver Kenny Britt on the left side for a a 17-yard gain.

On 3rd-and-7 with pressure coming, Goff launched a nice touch pass to wideout Tavon Austin who corralled the ball in the end zone for the 24-yard scoring strike. The touchdown was the first of Goff’s career.

The Saints were able to tie the after starting with good field position following a Rams three-and-out deep in their own territory. As he often does, quarterback Drew Brees methodically led the nine-play drive, converting a pair of third downs with passes to keep it going. On 3rd-and-goal from the three, Brees used play action to hold the Rams defense but then found wide receiver Brandon Coleman in the end zone for a three-yard touchdown.

With the game tied at seven, defensive tackle Aaron Donald made a crucial play to help the Rams get back on the board. On 1st-and-10 from the New Orleans 14, Donald’s pass rushing technique brought him to hit quarterback Drew Brees from behind and the impact also forced a fumble. Linebacker Mark Barron was there to fall on the loose ball and give the Rams the ball at the Saints’ six-yard line.

It didn’t take long for L.A. to capitalize on the opportunity. On 1st-and-goal, Goff hit Britt on a slant and the wide receiver took it in for a touchdown, giving the Rams a 14-7 lead.

But the advantage would not last long, as New Orleans came back to score 21 straight points. The first came in response to Los Angeles taking the lead. Brees led the home team into the red zone with a deep pass down the seam to tight end Coby Fleener. While the Rams forced the Saints into a 4th-and-1 play from the 10-yard line, New Orleans elected to go for it and scored a touchdown with a 10-yard run by Mark Ingram.
