Rams' defensive collapse spoils debut of rookie QB Jared Goff

Steve Dilbeck

LOS ANGELES -- The Rams thought they had figured out an effective enough way to introduce their prized newbie quarterback: Back him with a stifling defense.

In their 10th game of the season, the Rams finally presented their golden boy, quarterback Jared Goff, on Sunday at the Coliseum against the Miami Dolphins. If the No. 1 overall pick’s debut was of the uneven variety, it appeared it would be good enough to earn the victory.

But the Rams' defense finally wobbled in the fourth quarter, then fell flat. The Dolphins were all too eager to capitalize, scoring their only points in the final quarter for a 14-10 comeback victory on a drizzly Southern California afternoon.

The Dolphins had averaged 29 points per game in their past four outings –- all victories -- but were kept out of the end zone until there was 4:02 left to play. The 10-yard scoring pass from quarterback Ryan Tannehill to Jarvis Landry was the first touchdown the Rams had allowed in 11 quarters.

No. 1 pick Jared Goff unspectacular in debut as Rams fall

Eric D. Williams

LOS ANGELES -- NFL coaching graybeard and quarterback guru Jim Fassel provided the blueprint for rookie quarterback Jared Goff, who made his league debut Sunday for the Los Angeles Rams.

Hand the ball off to Pro Bowl running back Todd Gurley, who finished with 75 rushing yards.

“Gurley’s got to get going,” said Fassel, whose son John Fassel serves as the Rams' special teams coordinator. “That’s the very first thing. And then after that, give him some throws near and dear to his heart, so he doesn’t have to read a lot -- simple reads and quick throws.”

A steady drizzle fell during Goff's first NFL start, which brought some celebrities to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, including Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa and Rebel Wilson.

Replacing starter Case Keenum for the first time, Goff was unspectacular, completing 17 of 34 passes for 134 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Even so, his team held a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. But the Rams failed to hold on, losing to the Miami Dolphins 14-10.

Rams Fall to Dolphins, 14-10

Myles Simmons

On a rare rainy day in Los Angeles, the Dolphins engineered a fourth-quarter comeback, handing the Rams a 14-10 loss. Falling to Miami, L.A. is now 4-6 on the season.

The Rams got on the board in the first quarter on their second possession with a quick four-play drive. Wide receiver Tavon Austin got it started with a seven-yard jet sweep that ended up going 15 more yards with a facemask penalty. Then rookie quarterback Jared Goff completed his first NFL pass to fellow rookie, tight end Tyler Higbee, and followed that with a 19-yard pass to wideout Kenny Britt.

From there, running back Todd Gurley did the rest. The 2015 Offensive Rookie of the Year ripped off his longest run of the season — a 24-yard touchdown to give the Rams a 7-0 lead.

Los Angeles extended its lead in the third quarter, as kicker Greg Zuerleinhit a 46-yard field goal to cap a 10-play, 49-yard drive. The Rams had another chance to score in the fourth quarter, but Zuerlein’s 48-yard attempt went off the left upright and was no good.

That would be the turning point of the game.

After the missed field goal, Miami went on its first scoring drive of the game to make cut Los Angeles’ lead to three with just over four minutes remaining. The Dolphins capped the eight-play, 77-yard possession with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Tannehill to wide receiver Jarvis Landry. It looked like Landry would initially be stopped about four yards short of the goal line, but the Dolphins pushed a pile passed the plane. With the extra point, the score was 10-7, L.A.

Miami’s defense forced a three-and-out, and the Dolphins quickly advanced into Los Angeles territory. Tannehill hit Landry for a 15-yard pass, with 15 more tacked on from defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s roughing the passer penalty. With a few more passes, the Dolphins had advanced to the Rams’ 9-yard line before using their last timeout with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

After the timeout, Tannehill hit wide receiver DeVante Parker with a nine-yard pass in the front right corner of the end zone to take a 14-10 lead.

Jared Goff can't jump-start Rams offense and Dolphins score two late TDs for 14-10 win

By RICH HAMMOND / STAFF WRITER

LOS ANGELES – The Rams made a change at quarterback this week. It didn’t change their fortunes.

Hyped rookie Jared Goff made his first NFL start, which included a couple great moments and a few cringeworthy ones. The Rams defense was stout through most of the game before giving up two fourth-quarter touchdowns and they fell 14-10 to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon at the Coliseum.

Todd Gurley had a 24-yard touchdown run on the Rams’ second possession of the game and Greg Zuerlein kicked a 46-yard field goal late in the third quarter as the Rams took a 10-0 lead.

But the Dolphins responded after doing virtually nothing on offense the entire day.

Ryan Tannehill hit Jarvis Landry with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 4:02 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After the Rams were forced to punt, the Dolphins drove again, aided by a roughing-the-passer penalty on Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Tannehill found DeVante Parker on a nine-yard touchdown pass to give them the lead for the first time with 36 seconds left.

Goff, who took over the starting job from Case Keenum this week, completed 17 of 31 attempts for only 134 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions, on a cold, rainy afternoon.

Dolphins spoil Goff's debut with rally to beat Rams, 14-10

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- For 54 dull and rainy minutes, the Los Angeles Rams' defense appeared to be carrying Jared Goff to a victory in his NFL debut.

With two dramatic drives, Ryan Tannehill and the Miami Dolphins washed it all away.

DeVante Parker caught a 9-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds to play, and the surging Dolphins rallied for two late scores to spoil Goff's big day with a 14-10 victory Sunday.

Tannehill passed for 172 yards in the fifth straight victory for the Dolphins (6-4), who were dominated by the Rams' defense until their final chances for redemption. Miami left the Coliseum crowd in disbelief and barely kept alive its longest winning streak since 2008.

"I don't even know (how the comeback happened)," Dolphins coach Adam Gase said. "Just nothing was going right for us. We were terrible on offense."

After Jarvis Landry caught a 10-yard TD pass with 4:02 to play, the Dolphins got the ball right back and drove downfield for Parker's diving TD reception in the corner. Miami gained 152 of its 240 total yards on the final two drives, leaving the Los Angeles defense heartbroken and furious.

"We played pretty much great the whole day," Rams defensive end Robert Quinn said. "We kept fighting, but those last 6 minutes, I think it's going to haunt us."

Todd Gurley scored on a 24-yard run in the first quarter for Los Angeles (4-6), but neither team managed much offense until Miami's late surge.
