Rams want to give receiver Tavon Austin more chances to make an impact

By RICH HAMMOND / STAFF WRITER

LONDON – Three seasons of evidence shows that getting the ball into Tavon Austin’s hands – by any means necessary – works for the Rams. If only it could be that simple.

Austin’s involvement in the Rams’ offense has been inconsistent this season, even though the speedy receiver traditionally has been their most significant big-play threat. Austin has the ability to get behind defensive backs and catch the ball, and also take it on handoffs and jitter through opposing defenses.

Not so much this season, though. Austin ranks third on the team with 242 receiving yards, has only 12 rushing attempts and has reached the end zone only once in six games.

“Eventually, I’m going to throw the switch and that lightbulb will go on,” Austin said this week as the Rams prepared to play the New York Giants. “It will be 11 out there striking again.”

Austin actually wears No. 1 in practices, because he prefers it over No. 11 – receivers can’t wear single digits in games – but for much of this season, Austin hasn’t been the No. 1 threat in the offense. And that’s unfortunate for the Rams, as history shows.
