I think it is a fair comparison, and if Case continues to improve week to week he might well hold onto the job longer just like you pointed out with Warner. Definitely a correlation there in terms of the team wanting to start the veteran in order to win.
If he doesn't continue to improve, however, then we're going to see Goff much earlier. I'm still on the week five train, it makes sense to me UNLESS we see Case go into Arizona and win. So from that perspective this is a really important game. How Case plays this Sunday is going to factor in very much with that equation.
I don't think we see Goff in game 5 unless Case gets hurt or totally melts down. I think if Case plays in AZ like he's been playing and the Rams lose then Case will play game 5. If he loses game 5, then he's done and Goff starts game 6 in Detroit.
But if Case keeps winning alternate games and the Rams don't go under .500 then I don't see Fisher starting Goff until it looks like we're out of the playoffs.
Just my theory which is similar to what Coughlin did with Warner and Eli.
