So, as the Psych nut that I am, I have watched young QBs for a long time trying to figure out how and why each got their heads on right when they did ... and honestly, there is more to it than just one person, where they were picked, what was expected of them, their mentality, the city they live in, the weather at 4 that afternoon, etc.
It's really nuts. And if a coach makes a mistake ... it takes a lot of people down with it.
Now, let's look at Vince Young. He is theoretically the QB Fisher did not want to draft ... forced to play very early by ownership. Short term? Rookie of the year and pro bowl ... Long term? Mental breakdown and out of the league in 3 years.
That definitely affects this situation.
Los Angeles definitely affects this situation.
The fact that he was #1 overall rather than #2 affects this situation.
So what is at play here? We KNOW Goff is the better QB, and if there wasn't more to prepping Goff than getting him comfy under center, then he'd likely be in already.
So what do I think we're waiting for? I don't actually think it's Goff.
I think we're waiting on the Rams players to start playing like THEY are willing to go above and beyond to help out a new QB.
Would I want Goff throwing to a guy who's dropping the friggin football? No.
Would I want Goff starting behind a rushing attack that is not getting it done regardless of showcasing a superstar? No.
Would I want Goff having to play from behind because our defense can't get it together? No.
So far, one of those 3 is fixed.
I think that at some point, Goff will be ready regardless. I also think that there's a chance that regardless of his readiness, Keenum may be so bad that a change is forced.
My hope is that neither of those things happen.
My hope is that the players realize Fisher banked on their abilities so much that they all got job security by our losing 6 high draft picks .. and that they will play UP to deserving a shiny new toy throwing the football.
For me it's not Goff's psychological preparedness as the team's psychological preparedness to up their game to help a young QB thrive, rather than forcing him to win it on his own from the get go ...
Anyway, my two cents.
