I heard 2 things from Marcellus Wiley and Eric Davis on radio.
1. When a HC starts pointing to a specific player or position that is noteworthy. When Fisher calls out a player with criticism or false praise that guy's days are numbered. In this case it's Keenum when Fisher talked about not giving him blame or credit. They said the guys in the locker room are thinking the same thing. We should expect Goff soon.
2. Davis said he sat with Kroenke before the draft and told him the Rams should take Wentz cause he was a bigger, stronger, and a winner. He thought Wentz was a better fit for the Rams. He also said he knows why the Rams picked Goff. It's because Goff showed that he can get into the end zone from inside the 30. And that's what they felt they were missing. That's what they valued and wanted the most. I think Davis also said analytics played a role in the Rams evaluation. Apparently Goff had the best analytics.
What was interesting was that these guys, especially Davis since he said he looked closely at the tape twice, did not blame the OL for the Rams offensive problems. They said it was 2 things.
One is that Boras needs to get more creative in getting Gurley in better situations. Defenses aren't fooled by any of the Rams running schemes. Davis said Gurley touched the ball 20 times (I think that was the number) and he had to beat a free defender almost every time one on one almost immediately. Boras has got to do better than that.
And that with Keenum and these receivers, defenses don't respect them going downfield. Just because the Rams hit one or two deeper passes, defenses still don't respect it. They don't believe the Rams can do it consistently enough to beat them. Maybe Cooper will help.
What those ex-players were saying is that teams crowding LOS has less to do with Rams targets, and mostly to do with scheme and QB. Keenum just doesn't have enough ability to threaten teams deep on his own and he limits what Boras can call. I heard them say that teams need 4 games to get a book on a guy in a system and the book is out on Keenum. They also applied that to Gurley in this system. He's had only one 100 yard game in his last 10 games, and the OL is healthy now. As Fisher said it all points to the QB position. When you're seeing 9 in the box on every play, then the QB needs to produce a lot more than what Keenum is producing.
Well, my own take on the fisher comment was that he was "not" singling out Keenum or "pointing to a specific player" in the sense that you and Wiley/Davis think. So, i disagree on that.
As for the Davis comment about Snisher taking Goff in part because of 'analytics' and partly because Goff has a knack for scoring inside the redzone -- Interesting, and yes, i dont doubt those were two factors among many.
As for the comments about the OC -- I dunno if Boras needs to get 'more creative'. I just dunno. People said the same thing about the last gazillion Ram OC's all the way back to Martz. I never know what to think of criticisms of the OC. I dunno enough about X's and O's to say. I dunno what limitations Boras knows about that we dont. I dunno what execution issues are part of the problem. Etc.
As far as Keenum being a liability, and teams daring him to beat them -- sure, I agree. He's not going to scare anyone. Of the 32 starting QBs in the NFL he may be the worst. I dunno. I'd need to look at a list. But right now, he's the best choice the Rams have. Right now. Today.
So....all i got is "Go Keenum! Be scrappy! Dont throw any INTs! Manage the game!"
Not a very good chant, i know.
