They have all kinds of analytics that tell them how dangerous kickoffs are to all the players, much more so than Punts as the players are running half the field at full speed and colliding so they're looking to minimize that a bit. Nothing wrong with that, it's just the solution they came up with is terribly flawed. I heard Ryan Longwell on NFL radio saying they should have talked to more kickers and they would have known what was going to happen - teams would rather pop it up and try and keep you from reaching the 25 rather than just conceding the 25 yard line.
