What I keep hearing is that 1) Nobody pays the SB in one lump sum (especially for the highest picks) and 2) offset language is pretty standard even though not universal.
Also that basically a balance is usually sought between how much SB is paid all at once, versus offset language. So if Offset is included, then the SB is paid out more quickly. Or no offset and the SB is paid out over a longer period of time.
Here's the thing: on the NFL channel and most of the other NFL related shows, the players aren't showing any solidarity with Bosa. They're saying get into camp and start playing.
I think the issue for me is the Bosa is acting as though he is Andrew Luck, a rare prize. Bosa is by no means a rare prize, even if a team judged him 3rd best player in the draft. Teams understand that they may have to do something a bit different for the Franchise QB position, just like the Rams did in acquiring Goff. QBs are the exception to the rule......players understand that. But DE's?
It's pretty clear from Bosa's own camp that he wants no offset and the entire SB immediately. For a non-QB, non-rare guy? Ain't gonna happen.
And this fight is not a good thing, if player/team/teammate relationship has any bearing on the player's career. And it does.
that SD is asking Bosa to.
Didn't you acknowledge in the initial post this is how SD does business? But what you may have left unsaid, are they the ONLY team that does business this way? I asked Les, and could ask you the same question. If this is literally ANY of the other 31 teams, do you really think things would still be at this impasse? If not, that certainly sounds like SD at least shares some culpability.
How many players are we talking about? I heard LT was one, but when he was holding out, probably players who had nothing at stake were also giving him unsolicited advice on TV and he at the time thought they should shut their freaking pie holes (or something in stronger language
).
I'm just basing it on MY understanding that SD is asking Bosa to make a double concession no other player has ever been asked to. If I'm wrong, I'd flip my position in an instant and say Bosa is unreasonable, because that is entirely where it is stemming from. EVERYTHING I've heard is that Bosa was willing to make one concession but not both. So implicitly, he is willing to forego the offset language (I don't know how else to interpret he will concede one or the other?).
It isn't about QB or not QB to me, if they are asking him to do something unprecedented. Just don't ask him to do something nobody else has (QB or non-QB ). Problem solved. Again, hard for me to see how they don't share some culpability.
The media loves controversy and melodrama. And I agree, this is weird in the post 2011 labor agreement landscape (remember we had a discussion about this earlier, before this context, about HOW locked in and slotted thing were, and you were under the impression they were ENTIRELY and I noted almost but not quite - and here we are at the not quite part
). But if he signs in a few weeks, and plays with SD for 4-5 years or more, it will blow over. It did for Crabtree and McKinnie (pre-2011 extended rookie holdouts). I can respect Bosa not wanting to bust his hump any earlier than he has to if he thinks SD is wronging him with the attitude that he has to sign, has no alternative and stubbornly refuses to negotiate. There is a non-zero chance Bosa on principle is willing to risk almost certainly less money in 2017 to give SD a taste of their own medicine, to prove to them he absolutely has another option, they can't force him to do anything he doesn't want to (though again, I not only don't expect this, but would be surprised/shocked if he opts for that route, just pointing out for the record SD doesn't have ALL the leverage, Bosa has some to). Of course Bosa doesn't want to forego #3 overall money. But you can't tell me SD wants Bosa to hold out all year, either. Trying to publicly shame him into caving was imo a dumb move, and liable to just make him dig in further, increasing the acrimony and animosity between player/agent and organization.
You noted players thinking he is wrong, and some fans may think so, too, but I know for a fact there are knowledgeable SD fans that are apoplectic and think SD ownership is bungling, inept and a laughing stock, and want nothing more than for Spanos to sell the team.
