I'd come out and call San Diego a "ghetto-(bleep)" organization and hold out for the entire season. Hire an ex-Defensive End type personal trainer and work fundamentals and stay in shape, then let some team take me in round 2 or 3 next year and go from there. Money isn't everything, so if you're going to not accept what they're doing in principle dig in and ride it all the way.
The Chargers are a terrible org man. If he doesn't sign with them they're doing him a favor.
He can make most of his money (there are limits to how much SD can screw around with his contract due to the new labor agreement slotting system - he probably will have to yield on both SD's sticking points). And if SD is the most stubborn in this game of chicken, maybe it was inevitable.
In which case, who loses here? I totally agree with you, Merlin, SD is cheap (which is why I'll understand if he opts for the nuclear route). What do they get out of this? A much needed player will be behind all season trying to play catch up. And a lot of rancor and ill well directed at the team employing him, possibly permanently. He can opt to not re-sign with them in the future, why get off on such a bad foot just because they are cheap?
Man, I hope they don't come to LA, but if organizational antics like this are emblematic and representative, it all but guarantees it.
