It's both encouraging and discouraging to think these two guys could end up being Goff's go to targets and possibly be the Rams top two leading receivers in 2016.
Very encouraging that the Rams possibly find two starting rookie pass catchers, one being a 4th round pick and the other being an UDFA. I was high on Higbee and lobbying for the Rams to draft him well before the draft and he has done nothing to surprise me so far. I fully expected a healthy Higbee to start as a rookie and be a force in the passing game. I was also lobbying for the Rams to draft stud slot receiver Daniel Braverman, who didn't end up going until round 7 to the Bears and the Rams had three 6th round picks. I know Spruce was doing it against the Cowboys 3rd team defense and he needs to prove he can do it against a 1st team defense, but after watching him last night, I have all the confidence he can and will get the job done. Hands are glue and he seems to have that, "it" factor to him. Just need to seem him create separation against better defenders. Kudos to Snead for grabbing this kid as an UDFA. Sick move! Higbee and Spruce could eventually be the Rams version of Gronk/Edelman.
I wasn't a big fan of drafting WR Pharoh Cooper because I didn't see exactly where he would fit in this Rams offense and wasn't sold on him as that sure handed slot WR the same way I was with Braverman and now Spruce. I also kept hearing the Swiss Army knife motto for him, but we already have one of those in Austin. With that being said, if Cooper could just end up being a stud KR as a mid-4th round pick, I think we will all be pretty happy with the pick.
Now for the discouraging part. If Higbee and Spruce become the Rams leading receivers, where does that leave and what does that say about Quick, Britt and Austin? I have always been a Tavon fan and I know it was only one preseason game, but that drop on 3rd down last night was terrible. The guy is getting $12 mil next season. What does this say about Fisher and Snead acquiring pass catchers for their club over 5 years of drafting and signing free agents? I hate to beat a dead horse but I would say more than half this board immediately HATED the signing of Jared Cook when it was announced and that horrible $35 million move was 100% on Fisher after Miami ran the price up on him.
The other thing that I am slightly worried of is Fisher not running with the young guns in Higbee and Spruce even if they outplay the vets in preseason. I feel he holds Britt in a much higher regard than others do and will still look at him as the Rams #1 receiver and start him at all costs and look to have his QB target him often. I really hope if Fisher sees Goff is building a true rapport with the rookies in Higbee and Spruce that he and is coaching staff will allow him to go to them as often as possible, even if that means their older vets and higher priced talent are sitting on the sidelines.
I never have and never will have a lot of faith in any Jeff Fisher offense and his ability to acquire offensive talent for his teams, but I'm hoping his offensive coaches are capable enough and he's giving them the reigns.
