Depends on what one expects from a depth chart, dz.
For example, I see Cooper and Thomas as locks to make the 53. I even see Ccoper as likely starter in the slot. I see Quick and Marquez battling for the 5th and 6th spots with Williams and Spruce. Not even sure things to make the 53. Yet Quick and Marquez are listed ahead of Cooper and Thomas.
You already mentioned TJM listed as 3rd string. NOBODY would make that bet.
Harkey ahead of Higbee? Please...
Joyner is EXTREMELY unlikely to start at outside CB ahead of a healthy Gaines.
The depth chart is stacked with rookies behind vets and with no regard to actual realities.
A coach's depth chart would look far different, as we both know.
So, if one's goal is to predict likely pecking orders at these various positions, then this depth chart is absurd.
Might as well stack then alphabetically. Or by age. Lol.
Depends on what one expects from a first depth chart, 43. Key word being first.
I wouldn't expect a first depth chart to have many rookies listed above vets.
Cooper hasn't really even participated in TC yet. There is absolutely no way he'll be listed ahead of anyone. In fact, he better hurry and start showing his goods so that he's not in danger of being cut. It isn't unheard of for a 4th round pick to be on the chopping block. And it sounds like Thomas, Quick, Williams, Spruce, and Marquez are all having really good camps.
I just don't think that what you see is the way Fisher sees things.
I've heard that Quick is one of the go to targets in the RZ. They seem to be emphasizing him there. Given that, he's probably safe. I agree with Reggae on him: he's probably third on the depth chart. Based on everything that's been reported by the media, the coaching staff is very high on Marquez. In fact, one TC report described a coach bragging to an onlooker that he should pay attention to him. I'd be very careful assuming that a rookie Cooper, who has had little participation so far, is ahead of him.
Higbee is getting 1st team reps so I would be surprised if he doesn't eventually officially pass Harkey. Again, the key here is, this is the first release. Fisher isn't the type to anoint rookies quickly.
Joyner may very well start ahead of Gaines. I'd say that is a reality right now. The first issue is Gaines' health as you mentioned. He just recovered and they've been protecting him by holding him back. OTOH, Joyner apparently is playing lights out according to reports. In this context, it would be very easy for Joyner to surpass Gaines. In fact, from what I've read, the comp is between Joyner and Sensa for the starting position opposite Tru.
If I had to bet, I would bet that when it's all said and done, more rookies than you think will be stacked behind vets. IMO, that's the reality. We shall see...
