I have just never seen where Offense is a priority with Fisher. Good enough is good enough.
He has been all defense, all the time. He wants a great defense. And if they're not great, ferrocious will do.
That is why I find both the drafting of Austin and Goff as curious.
Gurley I understand; Fisher is trying to resurrect Eddie George. But why draft a prolific, skinny shotgun passer for a stodgy 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense? Why draft a smallish player like Austin with no real obvious NFL position in a conventional NFL offense? Fisher gave it a try to open things up but when it didn't come together quickly enough, he abandoned it for what he knows and trusts; run the ball, play close to the vest, trying to get it to the 4th quarter and then win with defense. And, I don't think he had the players or the coaches to go very far with that more open offense anyway.
Bottom line: Fisher doesn't seem comfortable with offense. It is like he has a love/hate relationship with it (mostly hate, I think). And so doesn't know how or perhaps doesn't want to give it enough attention or resources or time to manufacture a modern offense that is an actual scoring threat because there are risks involved that he doesn't want to take. I don't think he identifies with the mindset that good offenses have; but he identifies strongly with defense and that mindset. So, his offenses play defensively.
I dunno, Rock.
On the one hand, Fisher has definitely not been successful on O with the Rams.
But on the other hand, maybe he's seen the light. Maybe Snead/Demoff/Kroenke have "encouraged" him to upgrade his O for '16.
The moves made indicate a new direction might be underway.
Blockbuster trade up for Goff.
Permanent promotion for Boras who finished well in '15.
Hiring Mike Groh (might just be the second best offseason move this year).
Drafting Higbee after releasing Cook (that release had to be hard for Fisher).
Drafting Cooper (sounding like a potential steal).
That's looking like 5 dramatic offseason moves to benefit the O. So maybe there's hope...
