As good as the Los Angeles Rams have been the last two-plus years, many remember a time when they were one of the worst franchises in the NFL. The post-Greatest Show on Turf era was a difficult time for fans in St. Louis (and L.A. for one year) as the Rams struggled to win more than eight games from 2004-2016.
As part of the NFL’s 100th season, USA TODAY compiled a list of the 100 worst teams in league history. The Rams appeared on the rankings four times, but which team was the worst? Far and away, it was the 2009 squad that went 1-15.
That team was ranked the fourth-worst in NFL history, behind only the 1981 Baltimore Colts, the 2008 Lions, and the 1976 Buccaneers.
4. 2009 St. Louis Rams (1-15):These dudes again, though this is truly the nadir of football in the Gateway City. It marks the only time the Rams have ever gone 1-15, and they lost by an average of 17.9 points — an epic failure during the salary cap era. And drafting Sam Bradford the following spring merely proved another mirage. Theory: These Rams teams have been spared their deserved denunciation because of what happened in Detroit the previous year.
